Saint Dorothy
30” x 30” Oil on Canvas
The man has one arm, the woman is in handcuffs. She is a non-violent resister to war and the war machine. He is strong — he is the war machine — but let's not forget, he has one arm.
Dorothy Day (1897-1980) was a peace activist and advocate for the poor whose lifelong actions led to several arrests, the last one at age 75.
Around the age of 30, Dorothy Day converted to Catholicism and co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement, whose mission was to "live in accordance with the justice and charity of Jesus Christ." Nonviolent resistance, pacifism and equalizing the distribution of wealth are still guiding principals of the movement.
Dorothy Day died in 1980. She is currently being considered for sainthood by the Catholic Church.
